I-43 bridges project to advance into next construction stage

MILWAUKEE (WITI) – The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is advising motorists to watch for changing traffic patterns on I-43 between Howard Avenue and the Marquette Interchange in Milwaukee County, as construction on the I-43 Bridges Project advances into the next stage of operations.

On I-43 Northbound (NB), traffic is scheduled to be switched to the two inside lanes on the evening of June 20. All three lanes on I-43 NB from Howard Avenue to the Marquette Interchange are then scheduled to reopen by the end of the week.

This weekend, I-43 Southbound (SB) traffic from Mitchell Street south to Howard Avenue is scheduled to be switched to the two inside lanes, as the right lane is closed.  All three SB lanes south of Mitchell Street are then scheduled to reopen prior to Summerfest.

Motorists should also be aware of the following changes to freeway ramps within the project area:

Traffic accident causes backups over three miles long

WAUWATOSA (WITI) — An accident  on Highway 45 North near Watertown Plank Road is causing traffic backups over three miles long.

Authorities say the crash happened shortly before 6 p.m. Friday, June 14th.

The two right lanes of Highway 45 northbound are closed. Motorists are encouraged to find alternate routes.

The driver of a logging semi, the only vehicle involved, was not injured.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash.

Police seek to identify man who stole from Tosa Walgreens

WAUWATOSA (WITI) — Wauwatosa police are searching for the suspect responsible for the till-tap theft that occurred Tuesday, June 4th at the Walgreens located at 2275 N. Mayfair Rd. In Wauwatosa.

The suspect is described as black male, 30 – 40 years old, 5’8” – 6’00” tall, medium build, dark complexion, short black hair, wearing glasses, a Detroit Tigers baseball cap, a blue T-shirt with the word “Levis” written on the front, dark colored shorts, dark shoes and white socks.

According to police, the investigation of the incident has led detectives to believe that the suspect is likely the same as the suspect in previous, similar incidents in the City of Wauwatosa and other area municipalities.

Milwaukee YMCA names Julie Tolan as new CEO

MILWAUKEE (WITI) — There is a new leader taking the reins of the Milwaukee YMCA.  Julie Tolan has been named the new CEO and she is making history.

“I think this is really privileged work and I think our community needs the Y to be the very best that it can be,” Tolan said.

She is the first female CEO of the organization.

“It wasn’t that she was a woman, it was that she was really the best candidate.  She was the strongest candidate that we had,” YMCA board member Rick Schmidt said.

Tolan has previously worked as Vice President, University Advancement at Marquette University.  She is currently a consultant.

“She’s been working in the Milwaukee area her whole life and she’s been able to establish terrific relationships with people all over town at all different  levels,” Schmidt said.

Tolan begins her new job in August.

June 13th marks Wisconsin Heat Awareness Day

MILWAUKEE (WITI) – While an extended stretch of summer weather has yet to arrive in Milwaukee, the City of Milwaukee Health Department (MHD) is joining Wisconsin Heat Awareness Day to draw attention to the dangers associated with extreme heat each year.

“The message today is that heat can kill,” said Commissioner of Health Bevan K. Baker. “Unfortunately each year we see deaths related to heat events. Today, we are reminding all city residents to stay aware and stay prepared when it comes to hot temperatures.”

Heat waves have been the biggest weather-related killers in Wisconsin for the past 50 years. In 2012, the State of Wisconsin Department of Health Services confirmed 24 heat-related deaths in the state.

When summer’s hot and humid weather does arrive, the MHD reminds citizens to take the following precautions recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to avoid heat-related illness:

RV parking may be allowed in some parks during H-D 110th

MILWAUKEE CO. (WITI) — The Milwaukee County Parks, Energy and Environment Committee passed a resolution on Tuesday, June 11th temporarily allowing RV parking/camping in some Milwaukee County Parks during the 110th anniversary celebration for Harley-Davidson.

The Harley-Davidson 110th Anniversary is a year-long, global celebration connecting millions of Harley-Davidson fans united by a common bond and shared passion for freedom, self-expression and epic adventure. The events span 11 countries on six continents and are capped by two main celebration events in Rome, Italy, in June 2013 and Milwaukee during Labor Day weekend.

The idea needs the approval of the full County Board before it can move forward. That vote will come on Thursday, June 20th.
