PESHTIGO (WITI) — 48-year-old Brent Kaempf has been charged with first degree intentional homicide in the death of Patricia Waschbisch in Peshtigo.

A criminal complaint in the case says officers responded to a home on Thompson Street in Peshtigo on Monday, April 28th for a report of a deceased person inside the home.

The complaint says officials discovered Waschbisch inside the home, and discovered two knives near her body.

Police interviewed two individuals, who said they had invited Kaempf and Waschbisch over to their home that night for a bonfire and some drinks — according to the complaint.

Thousands turn out to march for immigration reform

MILWAUKEE (WITI) – Thousands of immigration reform advocates marched through Milwaukee on Wednesday, May 1st carrying signs and chanting “si se puede,” which means “yes we can,” with the belief that this is the most politically opportune moment in decades to achieve immigration reform legislation.

“We have a great optimism this year that we’ll actually get some kind of reform done. The political climate has shifted. Before, it was always friction. It was always hard for us to get any good legislation,” Primitivo Torres with Voces de la Frontera said.

Democrats and Republicans in Congress agree on the need to address the issue.

“Paul Ryan was an original co-sponsor of comprehensive immigration reform,” Luis Gutierrez (D – Chicago) said.

Gutierrez says Ryan could hold the key to passing a new law.

Cancer survivors teach students at Medical College

WAUWATOSA (WITI) — It’s a new concept the Medical College of Wisconsin is taking when it comes to educating its students that will help them learn more about the “silent killer” of women’s cancers.

Third year medical students are taking lessons from patients themselves.

The “Survivors Teaching Students” program has these three ovarian cancer survivors as lecturers.  They share their stories about symptoms, how they coped and how they dealt with other doctors.

“I knew something wasn’t right, went home and 3 hours later, I couldn’t walk.  They found a grapefruit sized tumor that wrapped around my fallopian tube and ovary and suffocated it,” said survivor Natalie Nowak.

It’s their experience that helps future physicians understand ovarian cancer, with the purpose of diagnosing and treating it early.

Shortfall in trans. fund could delay critical freeway projects

MADISON (WITI) — Wisconsin has big plans for fixing its highways but no way to pay for them. A massive shortfall in the state’s transportation fund means big road projects in the Milwaukee area won’t get done anytime soon.

The state’s Joint Finance Committee (JFC) addressed the issue during a public hearing on Tuesday afternoon, April 30th. Officials say the transportation fund has a $63.4 million shortfall over the next two years.

“I don’t know how we can do all the projects when we have such a big deficit.  We just don’t have the money,” said Republican Senator Alberta Darling, co-chair of the JFC.

The JFC is reviewing Gov. Scott Walker’s plan that would save millions by delaying construction on the Ryan Road Interchange in the I-94 widening project, delaying the Zoo Interchange work, and decreasing payments for maintenance on the Amtrak Hiawatha train line from Milwaukee to Chicago.
